THE SMARTEEZ - FASHION DESIGNERS

I was reading 'Red Bulletin' magazine today an come across a group of four young South African fashion designers (Sibu Sithole, Floyd Manotana, Kepi Mngomezulu and Lethabo Tsatsinyane) who go under the moniker of 'The Smarteez'. The four decided to enter the wolrd of fashion and create their own designs due to the lack of affordable brand names available in South Africa.

Read more and see some of their designs after the jump.

The name 'Smarteez' is a play on the sweet 'Smarties' which is 'colorful on the outside' and brown on the inside. The designers describe their project not as vanity project but as more of a social movement. It is a movement that has started to take of with no budget, no PR firm and no celebrity endorsement.

Mngomezulu stated that "The exposure was initially surprising, but now it makes sense because the international media recognizes this is authentic South African style. It's not taken from anywhere else." This is what I like about The Smarteez style, it does take from other cultures but at the same time shows the designers roots and African upbringings in their designs.

Below are a few examples of some of The Smarteez designs.
